Juxtaposition & Blending Photos in Photoshop

Juxtaposition is the placement of two things near each other for contrasting effect.

Use images you find that have a Creative Commons license and combine them in an interesting way using Photoshop. Consider Juxtaposition and how the images contrast one another.

Jerry Uelsmann is a photographer who is famous for combining different photographs to create new ideas and effects. He combined images in the dark room rather than on Photoshop. Check out his work here and his process in the video below.

Project Ideas

  • Create a new idea by using juxtaposition to tell a story. Use selection and blending tools in Photoshop to morph photos together.

  • Think about the idea of visual poetry. How could you create a project inspired by a song or poetry?
